ABC picks up five series to fill out its new season
Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Other Comedy Shows, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free I am about to write something that I normally don't do when it comes to the way networks program their primetime schedules. It's something that will shake your foundations, rock the world, turn Republicans into Democrats (and vice-versa) and make Amy Winehouse finally get sober. Ready? ABC is being smart with its programming schedule.
There, it's done. Now to sit back and wait for the accolades. Seriously, after years of relying on only a handful of shows to carry the schedule throughout the year,...

More America's Got Talent coming our way
Filed under: OpEd, Pickups and Renewals, America's Got Talent In one of the most unsurprising news of the day, NBC announces that it is renewing America's Got Talent for a fourth season. The "greatest show in the world," as host Jerry Springer says, is the most-watched summer show so it's no wonder the network wants to continue the adventure and make more money in the process.
Even if millions of viewers watch America's Got Talent weekly, it doesn't mean they are not tired of of some aspects of the show. Some changes are needed if the producers and the network want to score the same ratings...

NBC gets behind Chuck in a big way
Filed under: Pickups and Renewals, Chuck, Reality-Free If you're of the belief that actions speak louder than words, than this move by NBC is proof positive that the network has great faith in Chuck. NBC has given Chuck an early full-season pickup.
The term is called a "back-nine" order, which means that the adventures of a geek-turned-reluctant super spy, will be on NBC for all of 2008-09. The vagaries of the demographics and Nielsens notwithstanding, NBC is betting on Chuck.
The comedy-adventure is entering its sophomore season, returning on Monday, September 29, at 8 E.T. Apparently, the powers-that-be at NBC -- Ben Silverman...

Another Red Dwarf episode?
Filed under: Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, Programming, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free Robert Llewelyn, best known to Red Dwarf fans as the android Kryten, has confessed on KTSC-TV in Seattle that the BBC has commissioned a one-hour special of Red Dwarf to film in October. For those keeping track, Red Dwarf hasn't been on television since 1999.
This may be a mistake. On one hand, eight seasons of the show was beating a dead horse. It stopped being good after season three. On the other hand, nine years is certainly enough time for creators Rob Grant and Doug Naylor (or whomever they designate) to write an...

The chances for a Flashpoint pickup are good
Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free All right, let me say this up front and without equivocation: if CBS picks up Flashpoint and cancels Swingtown, I'm going to be ticked off. I'm not down on Flashpoint. As Jane wrote, Flashpoint is a good show. No 24, but solid procedural entertainment. However, when I read that Canada's CTV has renewed up north and sources say that CBS is close to doing the same, I immediately got my back up.
Why should Flashpoint get a break while an interesting, quirky and outside-the-box drama like Swingtown may not? It's disheartening to me that CBS is...

Stargate Universe gets a green light
Filed under: OpEd, Stargate, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free With that pesky business of putting the kibosh on season six of Atlantis out of the way, Sci Fi is now ready to announce that they are giving the Stargate Universe project a green light. The show will kick off with a two hour movie early next year and transition to a regular series for the summer. Creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper will be the executive producers.
Universe will follow a new cast of characters on the adventure that comes after they explore a ship launched by the...

America's Best Dance Crew: Finale
Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Pickups and Renewals, Episode Reviews (S02E11 ... or is that 12?) The live auditions were considered a sort of special, so does it count as episode one? This finale featured the return of all the crews from throughout the season and the results of which of the final two crews would be crowned. I'll just come right off the top and say that I was pretty disappointed to see Fanny Pak taken down before the finale. Of all the crews this season, they were the ones who got me the most excited.
The problem is I'm not sure which of...

Travel Channel picks up the ultimate travel reality reruns
Filed under: Programming, The Amazing Race, Pickups and Renewals It's really a no-brainer. What's a better second home for CBS's perennial Emmy-winning reality show The Amazing Race than the Travel Channel? What doesn't make sense to me is that the Travel Channel picked up seasons 12-14 of The Amazing Race. Season 13 premieres September 28 on CBS, with Travel debuting last year's Season 12 a few weeks earlier on September 3. But why didn't the Travel Channel just pick up the whole catalogue?
One of the things that makes The Amazing Race such a fantastic show is it gives us the opportunity to travel the world...

Naked Cowboy snags a reality show
Filed under: Programming, Pickups and Renewals If you've ever been to New York City, chances are you've found yourself in the neon Disneyland of Times Square. If you've ever been to Times Square, then you've almost definitely run into The Naked Cowboy. The Naked Cowboy is neither naked, nor a cowboy. Rather, he is a dude who hangs out in the middle of Times Square in a pair of tighty-whities and charges tourists for pictures as he bangs away on an acoustic guitar. He's been doing this for years in all kinds of weather, so for his trouble, he's getting his own reality show.

Lifetime says yes to high society reality show
Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Pickups and Renewals Not to be confused with Cashmere Mafia or Legally Blonde or Sweet Charity, Lifetime has a new reality series in the works with the catchy title of Blonde Charity Mafia. It's a docu-reality series, so they say.
Lifetime has ordered six half-hour episodes of Blonde Charity Mafia, following the lives of three young society women in Washington, D.C. who are famous for their work on political and philanthropic fundraisers in the nation's capital. If this sounds something like the Bravo Real Houswives franchise -- Real Housewives of Orange County, Real Housewives of New York and...
