Free at last, Free at last, thank God Almighty, free at last!(S05E15) When I used to teach high school English, one of my biggest pet peeves was reading a paper from a student who was obviously stretching two pages of ideas into the required four pages of the assignment. I actually preferred it when students came up short in page count instead of insulting my intelligence with superfluous words, plodding pacing, and ridiculous font and margin tweaks.

Watching the two hour -- that's right two hour -- finale ofLast Comic Standing, I couldn't help but be reminded of my...

One more week and I'm freeeeeeeeee!(S05E14) Here's an amazing story: I arrived home this evening to find that my TiVo only recorded the last 25 minutes of LCS. With a review to write, I scrambled, calling everyone I knew within driving distance, trying to find the episode.

None of my friends had it (10 million viewers a week? None in South Jersey, apparently). I was bummed because I didn't want to have to write an incomplete review. It wasn't until after all this that I actually watched the final 25 minutes my TiVo grabbed.

    Wouldn't you know that NBC...

  • Last Comic Standing: Audience Vote #3

Does anyone else think tonight was a trainwreck?(S01E13) It's unfortunate that after the NBC/Apple flare-up this week that people won't be able to easily download Last Comic Standing onto their IPods, because this week's show had it all:

A kinda, sorta standing O! A very apparent screw-up by one of the three remaining finalists! A set of produced pieces so poorly made that simply by airing them NBC set TV back 50 years (seriously, they turned my TV black and white).

What I'm saying is, who wouldn't want to take this show with them on the bus? The...

They should change this show so it's literally the last comic standing. You know, it's a contest where they all just stand up for a really long time.(S05E12) I can't help myself, I just need to blurt out tonight's winner: Doug Benson!

You almost thought I posted a pre-jump spoiler, didn't you? Admit it, you were sharpening your commenter fingers just ready to eviscerate me for ruining the show!

Well, I did no such thing. The only person who is ruining this show for you people is Bill Bellamy, and that's the way it's gonna stay!

    Let's get on...

Has anyone else noticed this show's obsession with microphones? Makes you wonder, from a Freudian perspective, I mean.(S05E11) There's a famous story about Jerry Seinfeld. Early in his career, when he was starting to feel the first warmth of "industry heat", he was offered a spot on the Tonight Show. This was the early eighties, remember, when a killer four minutes and a wave from Johnny pretty much guaranteed that you were headed for future glory.

He turned them down. His reasoning was simple. He had a great four minutes and would probably have killed; what he was worried about...

  • Last Comic Standing: Challenge Round #3

Sure, leave it till the second to last week for me to actually enjoy the show!(S05E10) In a lot of ways, writing my reviews ofLCS each week has been very easy. By hating the mindless format, the useless judges, the stupid challenges, the lousy editing, and the dearth of stand-up comedy, I was able to construct a pretty flawless template for each of my reviews: start with a thousand words or so about why one of the things I hated was so horrible, then review the comedy while commenting on how little of it there was, and finish up with a look at...

  • Last Comic Standing: Challenge Round #2

Only one more challenge round left? Wooohoooooooooo!(S05E09) Remember that story about The Doors? The one where Ed Sullivan told them that they could only be on his show if they changed the lyrics of Light My Fire? They agreed, but when they went on Jim Morrison not only said the original lyric, but emphasized it. The message he was trying to send to Ed Sullivan and the network was that no amount of television exposure was worth selling out his integrity.

Watching Last Comic Standing tonight made me wish that Jim Morrison was still alive. And a stand-up comic. And on this...

NBCGreat news for people who like standing comics and Americans who have talent: NBC has renewed both Last Comic Standing and America's Got Talent. Both series will return next summer.

LCS Logo(S05E08) If you see several spelling errors throughout the course of my review, please excuse them. I didn't suddenly forget how to type it's just that... well, after I finished my review of the new NASCAR DVD (24x24 Wide Open with Jeff Gordon), I got pretty excited about how good it was. I mean, I'm not one to toot my own horn, but it was clearly above average (especially considering the source material).

Anyway, I read the review out loud to my wife and when I was done, I threw my keyboard on the floor in triumph!

    It got smashed, of...
