  • New Futurama DVD advance review

FuturamaDisclaimer: TV Squad will soon be posting its own review of this Direct-to-DVD Futurama movie. Rather than keep our loyal readers in suspense, we'll be directing you to another review site until the DVD finally arrives in the mail.

Screen Jabber was able to grab an advance copy of the second Futurama DVD release, The Beast With A Billion Backs (lucky bastards). As a result, we are treated to a review by them.

The story takes place about a month after the events of Bender's Big Score. It seems that...

  • New Futurama movie coming to DVD in June

FuturamaAs the first Futurama straight-to-DVD movie, Bender's Big Score, begins airing on Comedy Central (they'll air the movie as a four-episode blok on Sunday night), Fox has announced the name and release date of the second straight-to-DVD epic.

AnimationMagazine.net reports that Futurama: The Beast With A Billion Backs will be released on June 24, and they note that Fox calls it "the most tentacle-packed Futurama epic." Since it's a continuation of Bender's Big Score, I'll talk about the plot of the new movie after the jump, for the benefit of those who haven't seen the first movie yet.

  • Slurm: It's highly addictive! And ... real?

SlurmAccording to Trademork.com, Twentieth Century Fox has trademarked the word "Slurm". For those who are unaware, Slurm is the highly addictive beverage used in Futuramathat comes out of a giant worm's butt.

The exact trademark relates to "carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks; fruit drinks; fruit juices; mineral and aerated water; bottled drinking water; energy drinks; syrups and powders for making soft drinks and other beverages, namely soft drinks, fruit drinks and tea; coffee-flavored soft drinks; Ramune (Japanese soda pops); powders used in the preparation of isotonic sports drinks and sports beverages".

tavaSo, we've got this promotional thing going on with this new zero calorie sparkling drink from Pepsi called Tava. Haven't heard of it yet? Well, from what I can tell, you certainly will. What did they give us to give away? How does this sound:
    • Two (2) 80GB iPod Classics.
    • Five (5) swag bags containing TAVA Canvas tote bag, TAVA t-shirt and TAVA pen.
    • Seven...

    • Futurama meets The Simpsons

Futurama: Bender's Big ScoreApparently, someone created a comic book in which the cast of Futurama meets the cast of The Simpsons. As a fan of both, let me say that it would be pretty cool to see on television.

It's not outside the realm of possibility for the two universes to collide since both products are owned by Fox, much as having the Flintstones meet the Jetsons (both owned by Hanna-Barbera). Matt Groening does own the creative rights to Futurama, whatever that means.

However, since they're now on two separate channels (The...

    • Well the first thing you know ol' Jed's a billionaire

Jed Clampett -- BillionaireYou remember the theme from The Beverly Hillbillies, don't you? It tells the story of how poor mountain man Jed Clampett was out looking to shoot himself some dinner when he came upon some bubblin' crude. Well, before you knew it Jed was a millionaire ($25 million, to be exact). Of course, that was back in 1962.

Today, old Jed is worth about $11 billion dollars! That's according to Forbes' list of the 15 wealthiest fictional characters according to today's real-world commodity and share markets. The Clampett patriarch is listed fifth on the list, between Futurama's...

    • Adult Swim airs every Futurama episode starting tonight

A flood of Futuram episodes begins tonightBelieve it or not, Futurama has been airing on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block for about five years. During that period, fans of the show have probably watched every single episode at least once, or twice, or fifteen times. Now, those same fans will get the chance to watch every single episode one more time as Adult Swim begins a Futurama marathon.

Starting tonight at 11:00 PM, and continuing until 11:30 PM on the last day of the year, there will be nothing on the schedule but Fry, Leela, Bender, and the rest of the...

    • The truth on how Futurama's Zoidberg got his name

Dr. Zoidberg got his name from a 24-year-old video game

Names are bestowed on people in many ways. Sometimes a name of a favorite relative or famous ancestor is given. Other times the provided name comes from a Hollywood star that you may adore. Then, there are times that a person's name comes from a Apple II video game that was completely coded in Assembly Language.

The last one is how Futurama's downtrodden, but lovable, Dr. Zoidberg got his name. The second one mentioned is the reason I named my son Mr. T Alf Keller.

Bart SimpsonNot enough credit is given to the voice actors and actresses who gave audio life to our favorite cartoon characters. Fortunately, blogs like mental floss are trying to pick up the slack.

A lot of the work of Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson, is mentioned, but I bet none of her other gigs pay as well as Bart. I'm actually a bit of a fan of Billy West and love his work on Futurama.

While I find the list impressive, I do note some glaring omissions....

    • David X. Cohen of Futurama: The TV Squad Interview

Bender's Big ScoreOn November 27, Futurama comes back in a big way with Bender's Big Score, an "epic" film involving all the characters from the show that ran on Fox from 1999-2003. The DVD is the first in a series of four direct-to-DVD releases, which will be edited into 16 episodes that will air on Comedy Central in 2008. Fellow Squadder Brad Trechak gave the disc a positive review last week, which is high praise coming from a big fan of the show as he is.

David X. Cohen, executive producer and show-runner of Futurama, spoke to me via phone last...
