  • Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends wins Emmy, kudos from my son

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends wins EmmyLet it be known that my son knows a good thing when he sees it. He's 14 now, but between the ages of six and 10, he was obsessed with Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, a Cartoon Network show that just earned an Emmy. Character designer Ben Balistreri won in the juried award category for individual achievement in animation for the "Mondo Coco" episode.

I would see the show in passing and think, what the heck is this? It just looked so weird,...

    • The Venture Bros: The Family That Slays Together, Stays Together (Part I) - VIDEO

      The Venture Bros.
      (S03E12)
Firstly, a bit of news. Both Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick, as opposed to a solo Doc, will be attending this year's Dragon*Con in Georgia, so go see them if you can. Secondly, the guys have done a video commentary for "ORB" and you can watch it on Adult Swim's website. Not as many off-topic ramblings that we know and love in this one, so if you miss irrelevance and mimed nunchuck skills, revisit the old "The Buddy System"...

    • Seven Olympic athletes who transitioned to television - VIDEO

When I think about the Olympics I don't think about the grandeur of the competitions, the feeling of global community, the individual stories of the athletes, or the mesmerizing synchronized swimming routines. The one thing that comes to mind when I think about the Olympics: anonymity. Out of the thousands of athletes that compete in these games many fade into the daily routine of their countries once the Closing Ceremony is completed.

Yet, there are a handful, particularly the up-and-coming stars of each Olympic games, that remain in the spotlight well after...

    • The Venture Bros: ORB

      Venture Bros.
      (S03E11)
We haven't seen the entire Venture family really buckle down and do some hardcore adventuring since last season's "Twenty Years to Midnight". This was more of a Da Vinci Code-esque adventure though, in the sense that it also involved mysterious paintings, secret codes, and weird albinos. This was one of the best episodes of the season, finally setting us on the right path to understanding many of the strange revelations from the flashbacks. Plus, it has set the perfect tone for our inevitably epic two-part season...

    • Saturday Morning: 1972 (Part 1) - VIDEOS

Fat Albert and the Cosby KidsWith a couple of Osmonds, a few Brady kids, an old Chinese detective, a dog and his mystery-solving friends, and Bill Cosby, the second Saturday Morning Revolution began in earnest in 1972. And, it was a long road to hoe to get to this point. That was thanks to the radical changes that needed to be made to the schedule during the late 60s and first few years of the 70s. Changes that were the result of mounting complaints by citizen action committees as well as nervous network...

    • The Venture Bros: The Lepidopterists

      Team Venture
(S03E10) The world of heroes and villains has a long, intricate history and with that comes lots and lots of cliches. Like, I mean, a lot of cliches. It was cool to see the show take on itself, making fun of things from invulnerable redshirts to protagonist/antagonist banter. Plus, we got to see giant robots and death rays, so all in all, it was a good day had by all. Also, "The Lepidopterists" pulled us back to the post-credits clip from "Tears of a Sea Cow"....

    • Watch animated Buffy while you can - VIDEO

animated buffyOK, now that was just plain fun. What was, you ask? I just got finished watching the less-than-four-minute clip of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer: The Animated Series.

Four years ago, it looked like this series was a go, but somehow, it just went. Our friend Jane Espenson penned some of the scripts, and tells us she's in if the project ever takes off again. And rumors abound that the Buffy animated series may just be revived.

Continue reading Watch animated Buffy while you can - VIDEO

The Funky Phantom Like the year 1965 was before the Saturday morning cartoon explosion of 1966, the year 1971 was also the calm before another storm. After years of producing and airing show after show, the networks took a breather during the 1971-72 season to look around and see where their industry was at the time. Looking back at it from present day it wasn't looking too bright.

With pressure coming from inside the networks (thanks to the censors) and from outside activist organizations, Saturday morning television began to fracture. Out of the 14...

    • Marvin The Martian coming to a theater near you

Marvin the MartianWhy do I think this is going to be really bad?

Warner Brothers has decided to make a big screen feature based on the Martin The Martin character, the little black and green guy who wanted to destroy Earth and/or Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in several cartoons. Now, a feature film based on the character wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, but here's the sentence that sends a shiver down my spine:

Project will blend live action and CGI.*

Ugh. They can't just do a straight animated movie, they have to have some sort...
