Champagne bottles may be getting lighter
Filed under: Champagne, Newspapers As with everything else these days, the price of glass is going up. Some wine and beer bottlers have already switched to less glass-intensive bottles and a French champagne maker is experimenting with the same idea.
Mumm, is experimenting with bottles that are 65 grams lighter than regular champagne bottles (which are about twice as heavy as wine bottles), in an attempt to cut down on costs. The company is currently storing the test bottles for two years to make sure the thinner glass can withstand the pressure that is produced by...

Raising The Bar: The Union
Filed under: Champagne, Cocktails, Gin, Spirits, Celebrations, Raising the Bar In August of last year, I became the luckiest guy in the world when Christine Nylin accepted my proposal for marriage. Being the dork I am, I set out to make up a cocktail symbolizing the event. I named it The Union, which not only highlights the joining of two into one, but also happens to be the name of the restaurant where I tend bar.
That cocktail has gotten a lot of play recently, the recipe popping up on different web sites, magazines and recipe collections. And now, it has another moment in...

Sparkling Sunday: Gruet & Humboldt Fog
Filed under: Cheese, Champagne I have to admit, I discovered Gruet at the omnipotent chain restaurant, well small chain restaurant, Harry's Taproom. Harry's is less than a block from my home base, so several Buckley meals are consumed there per month. They pride themselves on their unique wine list, which I have discovered is not as unique as I'd thought, since I can usually purchase most of their wines at Total Wine. It was New Years Eve 2007, and we were looking to have a pre-dinner cocktail before heading to another restaurant and then out on the town for some never disappointing D.C. nightlife. I wanted to...

Champagne and peach nectar make a sophisticated drink
Filed under: Champagne, Cocktails, France, Celebrations, Artisan Foods This past July fourth, I celebrated Independence Day with family by concocting a drink inspired by an Italian Bellini. In a large champagne flute, I poured peach nectar and champagne. The combination created a heavenly delicate flavor and a wonderfully creamy textured drink. I used a wooden skewer to mix the peach nectar that beautifully settled towards the bottom of the glass.
Not only did the combination taste great, but aesthetically, it looked marvelous. The champagne sat on top of the peach nectar and assumed a light pink color. On the bottom of...

Champagne aimed at patriotic Americans
Filed under: Champagne, On the Blogs, Celebrations I know champagne isn't really that popular a Fourth of July beverage, but what about one that's red, white and blue?
Pommery is offering a real French Champagne, but the bottle is designed with red and white stripes and a blue area that has stars on it. The bottle is topped in silver foil, and looks quite nice. The post over on Cool Hunting that has the best image of the bubbly.
Pommery is aiming this Champagne, called Pop America, squarely at those in the US. Why, I'm...

Raising The Bar: Muddling It Over
Filed under: Recipes, Champagne, Cocktails, Rum, How To, Spirits, Raising the Bar, Spring, Summer Nothing signifies late spring/early summer better for me than to see a bartender muddling mint for a cocktail. The light, clean flavors of mint bring a certain delicacy and refreshing quality to a drink, whether it be in the iconic Mint Julep, the omnipresent Mojito or any number of classic or new creations. On a hot summer day, nothing beats a cocktail elevated with the crisp flavor of mint.
Given its fragility, mint is an easy herb to abuse. I've been to a number...

Monday Happy Hour: Champagne Punch
Filed under: Recipes, Champagne, Happy Hour, Retro cookery
Are you familiar with Retro Housewife? It's one of the coolest destinations on the web, filled with lots of retro and nostalgic goodness. There are sections on fashion, furniture, books, home tips, even a blog (warning: if you're at work, don't click on that link, you'll get nothing done the rest of the day!). You don't have to be a housewife to enjoy it. Their recipe section is a ton of fun: recipes from decades gone by, with the country of origin listed too. This American recipe is for Champagne Punch. I can picture Rob and Laura...

Happy National Champagne Day!
Filed under: Champagne, Holidays, New Year's
How appropriate: National Champagne Day falls on New Year's Eve! I'm sure it's just a coincidence. I don't think I'll be drinking any of the bubbly tonight. My roommate actually bought a bottle of Korbel, but it was to celebrate the New England Patriots going 16-0 the other night. Tonight I'm not sure what I'm drinking yet, but rest assured, I'll be drinking. Take a look at this list of champagne cocktail recipes over at WineIntro.com. I didn't realize that many existed. Also, Rachael Ray has this recipe for Green Tea Champagne. Vegetables, Recipes, Champagne, Newspapers, Condiments When I was a freshman in college, some of my friends decided that it was time to get me drunk for the first time. The style of booze they chose to do this deed? Champagne. Probably not a wise move, as it made me more sick than drunk and left me with a decided ambivalence towards sparkling wines of all stripes. Oddly enough, I've now found myself in a relationship with a guy who really only likes champagne (and Pimms cups).
However, one thing I've always liked is champagne...
